Cardinal Collins Urges Canadian Party Leader to Reverse Policy Banning Pro-Life Candidates
Archdiocese of Toronto – May 14, 2014
Cardinal Thomas Collins, Toronto’s Roman Catholic archbishop, is asking Canadian federal Liberal party leader Justin Trudeau to rethink his decision to exclude candidates opposed to abortion rights from his party in the next election.
In a letter released on Wednesday, Cardinal Collins said said he understands the need for party discipline, but questions whether that discipline can extend to matters of conscience.
“Political leaders surely have the right to insist on party unity and discipline in political matters which are within the legitimate scope of their authority,” he wrote.
“But that political authority is not limitless: it does not extend to matters of conscience and religious faith. It does not govern all aspects of life.”
Trudeau announced the party’s pro-choice policy on May 7. “I have made it clear that future candidates need to be completely understanding that they will be expected to vote pro-choice on any bills,” Trudeau said.
