Bernard E. Johnson, Senior Executive Consultant

Prior to joining The Pelican Group, Dr. Bernard E. Johnson (Bernie) worked as a consultant to the wider Christian community on major donor development and leadership effectiveness. His clients included educational, social service, missionary and para church ministries with whom he has helped to raise in excess of $325 million.

Bernie has extensive experience consulting to the Catholic community having served parishes and parochial schools in annual giving and capital campaign projects in several dioceses including the Archdiocese of Chicago, the Catholic Diocese of Rapid City, SD, the Catholic Diocese of Erie, Pennsylvania, the Catholic Diocese of Little Rock, the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, and the Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls, SD. The scope of his consulting work has included feasibility studies, major gift capital campaign design and management, annual giving platforms, organizational diagnostic audits, stewardship enhancement programs for local parishes and writing training materials for all aspects of major donor and stewardship development.

Prior to his work as a consultant, Bernie served Presbyterian Churches as Senior Pastor / Head of Staff in Fanwood, New Jersey, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Richfield, Minnesota. Before entering the parish ministry, he was Director of Leadership Training with Christian Laity of Chicago, an ecumenical ministry to the business and professional community.

Bernie has been the initiator or a founding partner in several creative mission ventures. These include: The Bridge (ministry with runaway teens – Rockford, IL), Outreach Workshop (ministry with disabled adults – San Marino, CA), The Inter Faith Re-Employment Group (faith based outplacement corporation – Pittsburgh, PA), Lydia’s Place (ministry to women offenders – Pittsburgh, PA), Pittsburgh 2000 (faith based neighborhood revitalization program – Pittsburgh, PA), Senior Partners (public/private partnership serving senior adults – Pittsburgh, PA), The Hope / World Servants Strategic Alliance (a church – para church partnership mobilizing adults for short term mission trips –Richfield, MN).

He has also written for various publications including Faith at Work Magazine, Presbyterian Outlook, The Minister’s Manual, and Christian Laity of Chicago Candle. He currently writes a monthly column, “Spiritually Speaking” for Southwest Suburban Newspapers of Minneapolis, MN.

Bernie and his wife Patricia live in Eden Prairie, Minnesota and have two grown children. His interests include skiing, sailing, motorcycling, golf, woodworking and photography.
